50th Anniversary The French Chef

On February 11, 1963 The French Chef, Julia Child's ground breaking cooking show, debuted on public television.


I recall only vaguely seeing the show while it was running. It is available on DVD and worth watching, particularly the early episodes filmed in black and white as Julia and the film crew worked out what exactly they were doing.

Prior to the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking Julia started corresponding with Avis DeVoto which began not only the process of publishing the book but also a lifelong friendship. In a letter from May 5, 1952, Julia wrote:

"... I've finally found a real and satisfying profession which will keep me busy well into the year 2,000."

Indeed it did. Happy anniversary Julia!
