2 X 1 + 1       July 16, 2010

Managed to get through another three books this week.

Fistful of Sky and Fall of Light by Nina Kiriki Hoffman

I read these out of order which was not problem regarding the story lines, perhaps even interesting. Both books concern members of the Lazelle family, a group of witches with real magic powers. I enjoyed the earlier book a lot more, but both were interesting.

The Wasp Factory by Ian Banks

Strange, weird, twisted, crazy, psychotic. I used to read a lot of books like this. A very good novel, but not for the lighthearted.

Many thanks to Camille for all these suggestions! Due to the popularity of some of the book suggestions, I had to abandon the public library and resort to Amazon to get a few books. Approximately 2,200 pages of reading will be dropping on my doorstep soon. I think I'll need a lot more coffee.

Genies and Slackers and Demons, Oh My!       July 9, 2010

Powered through a few books since last I posted.

Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie

If you liked The Phantom Tollbooth, particularly the wordy bits, you should read this book. Heck, if you like the wordy bits in general, you should read this book. Great for grown ups, great for mid-grade readers. Great for water genies. Many thanks to Carol for recommending Rushdie (this was last year) and to Kristen for giving me this book.

About A Boy by Nick Hornby

If Hornby was American, he'd be Tom Perrotta, only funny. Thank goodness he's a Brit. The main character wouldn't be called a slacker across the pond, but basically he's eternally at loose ends, lies about being a dad to score with single moms, and gets entangled with a son he doesn't want. Much hilarity ensues. Highly recommended, and many thanks to Camille for the suggestion.

The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber

Set in London in 1888, The Ripper meets Greek mythology in this gothic romance set in Victorian England. Well written and researched, but just not my cup of tea. Glad to have the suggestion though (thanks Michelle!) as well as the other romance genre offerings on tap this summer.

Six books down, and 14 to go over the next 6 weeks. And those remaining books have lots and lots of pages. To quote David Byrne: "My god! What have I done!"

Book Three       July 1, 2010

Just finished The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood. Many thanks to Chris for the suggestion.

That brings my total donation to $15 so far for CLiF. I'm a slow reader and will have to buckle down to keep up the pace.

There are four contestants now; their own reading choices can be seen on the reading list.
